30 Days – 30 Minutes – Creativity Challenge

30 day creativity challengeWanna join in the fun?

There is one rule

You must spend 30 minutes a day for 30 days creating something.

It can be anything you like; arranging pebbles on the beach, taking pictures of the floor with your phone, ripping up newspaper and making mountains, forming the bubbles in your bath into clouds, drawing the first thing you see in the morning (actually, occasionally this is rather x rated so I’ll leave this one out), crocheting a hat, making pizzas in the shape of eyes, or doing proper and rather lovely drawings like Diana Powell who is the inspiration for this.

If you need ideas then you can look at my personal list of inspirations which is basically just an alphabetical stream of consciousness, very cathartic to do and ever changing. Or you could just use your brain and think of something yourself.

They don’t have to be consecutive days, there just have to be 30 of them. You can do more than 30 minutes but not less.

You can grab the banner from here, or even better make your own! And please let me know if you do the challenge so I can link to you.

You can also join the open Facebook group to post pictures and links to your blogs – https://www.facebook.com/groups/154085144775381/

30 days of creativity – Day 29 – Particles

Day  29 - Particles Every now and then, because I am a lucky woman, I get to go to the MShed in Bristol and use their Victorian letter press. It's a huge ornate monstrosity with a lever that you pull to bring the weight down onto paper on top of whatever you are printing. It was designed for metal letters, tiny little things that are placed in holders that are now only used by artisans and people with a lot more patience than I will ever have. I was making plates from cardboard and…

30 days of creativity – Day 28 – Cat Mummy

Day  28 - No cats were harmed When I collected my son from school today I had to tell him that the cats were fine, no matter what it looked like. This idea came about after a drunken conversation with a friend, we know how to have fun. It was started with a hangover and is not yet finished. There are some mighty fine cat mummys in Bristol museum and I need to go up there and look at them to work out the next step. It's fiberglass (I had some of the rolls of stuff they use to fix…

30 days of creativity – Day 27 – Circus Theme Crafty Creatives Box

Day  27 - Crafty Creatives box 16 A couple of weeks ago I went to a show at Creative Common in Bristol, which had freaks in cages; a dominatrix Panda, who for some reason was doing her own hoovering (get a gimp girl!) and a rock lion you could play with. A few days after that I spent all of Sunday and Monday nursing a gigantic hangover and box set binging on all episodes of Carnivàle, which has a bit of all that is good viewing as far as I am concerned; satanism, sex, magic realism...…

30 days of creativity – Day 26 – Photos of Early Autumn

Day  26, Oldbury Court in October. Tuesday is my old lady dog walking day, so I dragged Pippa round her local park and took some pictures. It is often more of a dog drag than a dog walk, she is reluctant and stroppy and has to be constantly kept on a close lead because she attacks other dogs. I'm very fond of her.   You can see the reason this started and the rest of the days here - http://www.ragbaby.co.uk/1120-2/ And if you want to join in we have a Facebook group…

30 days of creativity – Day 25 – Zen Doodling

Day  25, monochrome mindfulness It only seems last week that I got my first box from Crafty Creatives. I get one a month because I'm worth it, and because it's become fun to do stuff like this with my 10 year old son. Box 15's theme is black and white and as before the box is generously rammed with goodies, including a nice, thick papered notebook and a very gorgeous fineliner. Crafty Creatives have suggestions on their blog and Zen Doodling was mentioned. I've seen doodles like this…

30 days of creativity – Day 24 – Crafty Creatives Box

Day  24, a box of goodies. Disclosure  - I'm reviewing this because I like it, I wasn't given a free box to review, this is totally unbiased. A while ago, as a treat to myself for being dumped out of the blue by a dickhead going through a mid life crisis I signed up for a monthly box from Crafty Creatives. For just under £13 delivered you get a box of goodies and instructions to make things once a month, each with a different theme. Past themes have included Steampunk and Glamour…

30 days of creativity – Day 23 – Somerset Rural Life Museum

Day  23, getting crafty. I've driven past the Somerset Rural Life Museum hundreds of times assuming that it was an expensive attraction. In fact, it's a free museum and if you catch it at the right time there are loads of things to do there. We (me and my 10 year old) accidentally went on Family Harvest Day by noticing the ice cream sign for the cafe, then noticing the massive great threshing machine outside. A team of people were making bales of hay, feeding straw into one end of an…

30 days of creativity – Day 22 – At the Airport, full of drugs, and a haiku

Day  22, waiting for a flight To get on a plane I need the correct ratio of valium to alcohol. It's fine if I'm with a friend because I can just zone out and pretend it's not happening. If I'm with my son I go into mother overdrive and I'm more worried about him bouncing into a pile of expensive duty free I then have to pay for, than the flight. If I am on my own it's not easy. So, I'm sat in Bristol Airport with a most delicious Guinness on top of the valium I'd had that morning, and…

30 days of creativity – Day 21 – Printing at the Mshed

Day  21, Mshed Printing Workshop Occasionally I get to do workshops at the Mshed in Bristol. The picture of me on my design site -  www.nakedwebsite.co.uk is from the Mshed, we spent a happy couple of hours throwing string around. The theme of todays workshop was memories of Bristol. Since I'm not Bristolian and we live in the Mogadishu quarter I don't have nice memories about our area. But I do like Cabot Tower, which you can helpfully see from the window of the Mshed studio. One of…

30 days of creativity – Day 20 – Collaborative Work

Day  20, painting with a 10 year old. A friend was decluttering a canvas so we got out the oil paints and painted over it. Then my son used some thingy on the camera to make a collage. I got into smudging the colours together, he did some intricate little pictures influence, the precocious brat says, by Munch. From top left on the top he has named them Hell is in us all Journey to the Underworld The God of Destruction Then on the bottom row Cry Terror Ahh, happy…

30 days of creativity – Day 19 – Skeleton

Day  19, Bones I was waiting somewhere there happened to be a skeleton, so I drew it. The proportions are right but I was too chicken to shade it. No Haiku today, not in the mood. You can see the reason this started and the rest of the days here - http://www.ragbaby.co.uk/1120-2/ And if you want to join in we have a Facebook group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/154085144775381/ Over on Crackbook a bunch of us are going to be working through Drawing on the Right Side…

30 days of creativity – Day 18 – It seems I am a fucking hippy

Day  18, Glastonbury Tor It seems I might be a fucking hippy after all. Sitting on top of Glastonbury Tor makes me feel good. Apart from when some wanker comes along and inflicts us all with his musical instrument, then the kill instinct comes out good and strong and I feel more like myself. My son joined in today by racing round taking pictures. The first sketch was of the field opposite where I was sat in the shade trying to filter out screaming children and happy fucking bastard…

30 days of creativity – Day 17 – Sprog and a mobile phone rant

Day  17, child playing on tablet Quick sketch of my son playing on our lovely new Samsung Galaxy Tab. Behind the main drawing is his arm, when he moved to lean back and stroke Scumspawn the cat, but he kept moving and there is no way I can draw a moving hand. The tablet came 'free' with the doggiest piece of shit phone I have ever had in my life; the Samsung Galaxy Ace. If you want a phone that seizes up everytime you want to make a phone call, check your Facebook or text someone,…

30 days of creativity – Day 16 – Narco Lounge Combo at the Louisiana

Day  16, Music This was a quick sketch of the very entertaining Narco Lounge Combo who describe themselves as Bristol's Handsomest Band. They had nice shirts and good cheesy demeanors and they play lounge with electro/prog overtones if you can imagine. If you can't, you can here it here - http://narcoloungecombo.bandcamp.com/ Anyway, they were entertaining and I liked them and I attempted to draw them. In the dark that is the upstairs room at the Louie. After this lot there was a…

30 days of creativity – Day 15 – Fucking Glastonbury tor and lots of swearing.

Day  15, Glastonbury tor. I'm not a fucking hippy trust me, but I did need to get some exercise and blow some cobwebs out of my stupid mind that is full of what if's and if onlys. I was hoping to get to the charity shops because my retro Denby came from Glastonbury but I have a very low tolerance of crystals and fucking dreamcatchers make me pull wings off fairies. It started raining about half way up the hill, and I did this quick sketch of the door of the church at the top of the hill,…

30 days of creativity – Day 14 – Drawing without looking at the paper

Day  14, breakfast with my son This was a really quick sketch of my son (on the left, he has long hair) drinking orange juice while waiting for breakfast to arrive at Bordeaux Quay.  We needed a treat, it's been shitty recently. After the quick sketch we both did drawings of each other, some when we looked at the paper and some without looking at it.     You can see the reason this started and the rest of the days here -…

30 days of creativity – Day 13 – Drawing things I can’t see properly

Day  13, tired and stressed It's late, last night I was woken up by some arsehole fixing his fucking car outside my window at 2am, then by munters shouting in the street at 4. I'm not a happy bunny, I am knackered. I never shout at them in case the take it out on my windows, I just hope the arsehole runs the munters down and gets locked up for life. Anyway. It's nearly 10pm, the light isn't great and I had a quick sketch of the Eudicella which are beetles that deserve a longer drawing…

30 days of creativity – Day 12 – Seagull descending a staircase

Day  12; drawing things that move. Sat in a cafe in central Bristol trying to draw a seagull who was chomping down huge chunks of bread left over from someones baguette. I spent some time looking at a pigeon with the most amazing eyes, orange like beacons. The rest of the pigeon was manky and citified, half a foot, walked with a limp, asking me for any spare crumbs, but his eyes were amazing. You can see the reason this started and the rest of the days here -…

30 days of creativity – Day 11 – Vase on the right side of the brain

Day  11; I blame Diana Powell for this idea. Diana's idea is to do an exercise from Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain every Sunday. The first exercise is also on the website for the book and you can see it here - http://drawright.com/vaceface.htm There is also an online version of the exercise but I couldn't get it to work. Not that I could get the real life version to work that well either. I experienced real conflict with this seemingly easy challenge. All you have to do is draw…

30 days of creativity – Day 10 – Foot

Day  10; Copying Shani Shani Burgess is also doing the 30/30 challenge - and on her day 5 she drew a picture of her foot. Shani also does amazing Paper mache I am very jealous of! This is a great idea because I have control over my foot moving! It's not like trying to draw cats or people. My foot drawing was done last night, by the light of the reading lamp in my bedroom. It's not an excuse for the lack of quality of the drawing. I feel a whole lot better about my ability to represent…
