30 days of creativity – Day 28 – Cat Mummy

30 day creativity challengeDay  28 – No cats were harmed

When I collected my son from school today I had to tell him that the cats were fine, no matter what it looked like.

This idea came about after a drunken conversation with a friend, we know how to have fun.

It was started with a hangover and is not yet finished. There are some mighty fine cat mummys in Bristol museum and I need to go up there and look at them to work out the next step.

It’s fiberglass (I had some of the rolls of stuff they use to fix broken legs), papier mache, newspaper, silver foil, masking tape and dust sheet ripped up and stained in coffee and tea.

It’s not dry yet so I’m not sure how it will look in the end, it should have some painting on it too but I may just give up at that point. It will live next to Nick Drake, the stuffed duck.

You can see the reason this started and the rest of the days here – http://www.ragbaby.co.uk/1120-2/

And if you want to join in we have a Facebook group – https://www.facebook.com/groups/154085144775381/
Over on Crackbook a bunch of us are going to be working through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain: A Course in Enhancing Creativity and Artistic Confidence

The first exercises are to draw a self portrait, your hand and something else I can’t remember so you can see improvement. Then you move onto drawing a vase from a silhouette. You can see the vase exercise here – http://drawright.com/vaceface.htm.

The plan is to do an exercise every Sunday from the book.

Every Record I Own – E is for Brian Eno – The Jezebel Spirit

Brian EnoDavid Byrne ‎– The Jezebel Spirit

enoThis has got the David Byrne stamp of funk all over it, you can just smell those Talking Heads. I like side B best, it’s a bit Smiths and a bit Grace Jones but all over Eno and Byrne.

Brian Eno is the new messiah. What would Brian Eno say?

Every Record I Own – D is for Donovan – Cosmic Wheels

Donovan ‎– Cosmic Wheels

cosmicI was never one for coloring in when I was a child and now I prefer to Photoshop than get ink on my fingers. I’ve always loved the cover and inside of Cosmic Wheels and I think when I was little I might have thought that was how it was, the sky was solid, stars were permanent light fixtures and outside of the ether was order in monochrome.
The album itself stays in my collection despite its god bothering misogynistic lyrics purely for the title track because it makes me feel happy.

Every Record I Own – D is for Deep Purple – Made in Japan

Deep Purple ‎– Made In Japan

deepI only noticed Deep Purple because they mentioned Frank Zappa and the Mothers in Smoke on the Water.
Wikipedia say “The lyrics of the song tell a true story: on 4 December 1971 Deep Purple had set up camp in Montreux, Switzerland to record an album. On the eve of the recording session a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert was held in the casino’s theatre. In the middle of Don Preston’s synthesizer solo on “King Kong”, the place suddenly caught fire when somebody in the audience fired a flare gun into the rattan covered ceiling. The resulting fire destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers’ equipment. The “smoke on the water” that became the title of the song referred to the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino as the members of Deep Purple watched the fire from their hotel.”
I would have heard this a lot at rock night at Woods in Plymouth. Downstairs in Speakeasy was goth and indie and upstairs was rock, you could move between the two. Upstairs rows of people with long hair would line up and greebo, downstairs people snogged a lot.
It’s ok for now and then.

Every Record I Own – D is for Duran Duran – Rio

Duran Duran ‎– Rio (Part 2)

duranDuran Duran equals Smash Hits for me, waiting weekly for the next issue so I could translate the lyrics. If you need a reminder of Smash Hits then check out Like Punk Never Happened – Brian McCloskey’s Smash Hits archive – he has a complete collection from November 1978 until July 1985. I would have been reading it in about 1982 when Rio came out.
There were girls at school who looked like the girls Duran Duran would hang out with. I wasn’t one of them, I could never get my bitch level quite high enough.
I bought a Roxy Music album a while ago which is more like Duran Duran than they were themselves, only 10 years earlier.

Every Record I Own – D is for The Doors – LA Woman

Doors* ‎– L.A. Woman

lawomanI’m 15 and my boyfriend is a drug dealer, I am as cool as fuck, and I don’t bother with school. Actually I’m not at all cool, I just don’t notice when people say hello and I fail to recognise people I’ve met before so I come across as aloof. Basically I’m just plain stupid and I can’t handle hotknives.
This was my soundtrack. I had it on a tape and played it to death. It’s a deliciously sinister album, even the more upbeat tracks like Hyacinth House hold mysteries – what are they doing in there?
I listen to this regularly now I’ve grown into my coolness, the title track is on my running playlist and every time I play it I’m blown away by how that mojo keeps rising. I think a track can’t get any better and there it goes, up up and away.
